Nolita Market

The other day I stopped by Lolita Market on my way back from the herb doctor in Chinatown.

I really liked the way the market was set up as well as their interesting local products.

They served handcrafted pickles that are made in Brooklyn by a brand called Sour Puss Pickles. There were many different varieties of pickles including string beans, corn, carrots, and even cauliflower!

I also really liked how the liquid soaps are sold in bulk and you buy your own bottle and fill it up yourself. When you run out of soap you can come back to refill your bottle. This is a great way to avoid wasting plastic bottles.

image

They also had a variety of local jams that are pectin free and all natural.

image

They had some interesting products with Japanese influence as well like Genmai Rice Syrup (Brown Rice Syrup) and Organic Black bean spaghetti!

There was a great looking coffee bar at the front of the store but unfortunately I had already drank two cups that day…next time!

Day trip to Beacon NY

Yesterday we took trip to to Beacon, NY. It was about an hour and a half car ride from Brooklyn.

There were a bunch of cute cafes, antique shops, and vintage shops.

image

This was a handcrafted soap shop that we went to.

image

I thought this was a really great idea. It was on the wall at the vintage shop that we visited called blackbird attic.
image

This was my favorite cafe out of the cafes that we visited. They only sell coffee so you’ll need to stop by another place for sweets. But the interior of the cafe was awesome and they had an old record player playing music. Check out their website : Tas Kafe

This restaurant served hand crafted beers and artisanal fare. The tables were made out of empty beer kegs. We really loved this restaurant. Here is the website: The Hop

The parsnip soup and pork pâté were great!

Beacon, NY isn’t too far from Cold Springs so if you have some extra time check out Cold Springs too!

Harney & Sons Tea Shop- Soho

This past weekend I visited Harney & Sons Tea Shop in Soho.

IMG_9489

The interior is really beautiful with a lot of use of wood and rustic accents.

IMG_1962

They have an entire wall filled with different kinds of tea in canisters!

IMG_6508

Tea accessories, snacks and books are sold as well.

IMG_3968

There is even a tea cafe that you can sit down and enjoy a cup of tea at in the back of the store!

Mariebelle Tea Shop in SOHO

IMG_4502

This past weekend we visited Mariebelle  tea shop in SOHO.  Although I have a box of their tea at home, it was my first time inside the shop.  The shop was really cute and beautifully decorated for the holidays.  We sat at the cafe and ordered tea and a cappuccino. We also had a piece of chocolate cake as well.  I had “soba-cha” (buckwheat tea). I was really surprised that they served soba-cha there since it is a Japanese (somewhat minor) tea. But it was really delicate and delicious.  However I still prefer their Earl Grey tea which I ended up buying a box of on the way out.  It’s definitely a great shop to visit if you are ever in SOHO and I think that it is particularly beautiful at this time of year.

Cha-an Japanese Tea and Sweets Shop in New York

 IMG_5856

Cha-an is located in the East Village in New York.

IMG_4744

They have an extensive list of teas on their menu and they are also displayed beautifully in their canisters on the shelves of the cafe.  They serve Japanese tea as well as a wide variety of Chinese teas, herbals teas and other teas from all around the world.

IMG_8285

They serve light meals using healthy ingredients as well as great desserts!

IMG_9323

We tried their green tea parfait and kinako mochi.  Both were excellent!

Check out their menu on their website: http://www.chaanteahouse.com/

They are located on 230 East 9th Street, 2nd floor

Where to eat Mont Blanc-Japanese chestnut cream cake in New York

IMG_0943

I don’t think that there’s anyone who like Mont Blanc (Japanese chestnuts cream cake) more than I do.  One of the things I miss most about Japan is that you could find Mont Blanc at almost all of the bakeries, cafes, department store basements, and even the convenience store!

However there are actually a bunch of cafes and bakeries that serve this delicious cake right here in New York as well!

Lady M is located on the Upper East Side. Even though Lady M is not a Japanese bakery, they serve many Japanese style cakes and pastries, one of them being Mont Blanc!  If you like chestnuts and cream and of course cake, I’m sure you’ll love this dessert.  Lady M also has a bunch of other desserts that are great like their green tea cake and green tea mille feuille.  Why not try them all!
